Brian Lehrer

Brian Lehrer interviewed Sean Spiller on his May 1, 2025 WNYC program. Spiller was one of six democratic candidates running for governor of New Jersey.  As a retired certified public accountant and a tax exempt organization subject matter expert, I have been investigating Sean Spiller for nearly two years now and have accumulated over 5,000 documents revealing evidence of laws violated by Spiller as president of the NJEA and as a one term failed mayor of Montclair.

I called in at the beginning of the Spiller segment and was placed on hold for over half an hour, the duration of the segment, and was not permitted on air. My question, provided in advance of being place on hold: Why does the NJEA report political contributions as charity on it’s annual Form 990? (NJEA Fraud)

Listening to the segment I was struck by how unprepared Brian Leher was.

Spiller claimed that he designed healthcare plans that saved billions, then why did he claim eligibility for healthcare coverage (State Health Benefits Fraud) from Montclair when he was covered by the New Jersey Education Association’s plan? Sean Spiller was famously subpoenaed (Attorney General Subpoena) for claiming health benefits he wasn’t entitled to. Much has been written about this. How could Brian Lehrer allow Spiller make this claim unchallenged?

Spiller claims that he worked with developers in Montclair to make Montclair more affordable.  You need to earn at least $120,000 to rent an apartment in Montclair where monthly rents average over $3,000.  Most teachers earn far less.

Spiller claims he is financially responsible, so why did he give the Township of Glen Ridge (Glen Ridge Fire Services Contract) a $20 million discount on fire services, despite public opposition, burdening Montclair residents with the cost?

Spiller claimed he is the most transparent of all the candidates. Then why did he plead the fifth over 400 times in his deposition in the Rao Case? Spiller even pled the fifth to the question: “You have a full-time job right now as the president of the New Jersey Education Association since September of 2021, correct?” Answer: “Upon the advice of counsel, I assert my fifth amendment privilege and respectfully decline to answer your question.”
