Fire Department Staff Paid to Take Others’ Shifts

In May 2022, yet another scandal at the Montclair Fire Department (MFD) bubbles to the surface. During Bruce Morgan, the Township Affirmative Action Officer (AAO) investigation of the Firefighters promotional exam complaint it became known that over an extended period, white firefighters were paid to take another firefighter’s shifts.  The elaborate scheme was devised to ensure that the absent firefighter was able to accumulate sufficient credit to be eligible for a full fire fighter’s pension while working another job. Details of this fraud are also described in the Rao Case. As stated by the Montclair Local’s May 24, 2022 report, none of the firefighters involved were disciplined.

This MFD issue transpired during former Chief Herrmann’s tenure. He was forced to retire in March 2024.
